I've been watching the slow progress on the so-called male contraceptive over the last year or so. The development is being hailed, not as a victory against unwanted pregnancy, but instead as a landmark in women's liberation. This is because women, apparently, are tired of being responsible for contraception.

Now, while it may be fair to say that the burden of ensuring contracepton is in place should not be the responsibility of only one sex, the problem I foresee from the availability of a male contraceptive is simply that people will cease to take any. Women will stop taking them, because the pills play havoc with their hormones (and don't they let us know it), and men won't take it, because they're men.

And so we'll have a baby boom from the idiot brigade who have sex assuming that the other is taking a contraceptive of some form. Needless to say this is completely counter to the intentions of those looking to introduce the changes in the first place.

I really fail to see how these people expect the plan to succeed. This country has proven time and again that we'd rather catch gonorrhea or chlamydia and have a half dozen kids we don't want and can't afford, than actually take any responsibility for our actions. Much less act responsibly in the first place.

So, for my part, before this idea is even fully implemented, I'll firmly plant it as yet another shiny brick on the road to Hell which, as we all know, is paved with good intentions.
