The Suffragettes Oblivion

There is something at the back of my mind blaring like the sound of the alarm clock that invades your dreams in the morning. Subconsciously, my mind is warning me that something is wrong, and a glance at the news tells me all I need to know as to why I am feeling this way.

The same few news stories have now been regurgitated ad nauseum for several months now. I am not under the mistaken belief that the media of this country think that it is in the national interest for the population to be particularly well informed on the circular, uninteresting and unprogressive sagas that continually make the headlines.

The malfunctioning government and their supposed politically correct regime of firmly stomping on the hard working white British male. The downward spiralling Prime Minister's refusal to leave office, and the ongoing escapades of his incompetent cabinet. The war on terror, a war which is being lost, and is only now little more than an excuse for slowly introducing an Orwellian dictatorship. The furore of climate change, and how we're all at fault, yet refuse responsibility. The escalating erosion of 'natural capital' - the environment - and the increasingly ludicrous choice of short term profit over long term industrial viability.

We are bombarded with these issues on a daily basis. The term 'forcefed' is apt only because the automatons that populate this pathetic little island are incapable of looking beyond the lengths of their own noses to peer deeper into the world that is closing in around them. 'Terror laws' that reduce freedom, 'diversity legislature' that is inherently discriminatory, the attempted transformation by corporate strategy to turn human beings into homogenous consumption machines driving their profit margins, the direct assaults by European states - members of the EU no less - on freedom of speech, and the escalating unease between Christian Western Europe and the Muslim states to the East.

The issues that will eventually drive our futures our criminally marginalised to the extent that in a period where inflation is soaring, government is planning to throw millions of tax pounds of NHS funds at drug users, when the average 30 year old has no chance of affording a place to live, when prisons are full to bursting and the best suggestion the Home Office can produce is allowing criminals to walk free instead of jailing them, in times like these, with the very walls of reality crumbling mortar at our feet, the news items we are most noticably presented with are the ill-informed stupidity of an idiot woman in the Big Brother house, which is erroneously translated as racism (an issue so big, the Indian government even offered a press release saying that the epidsode was damaging relations between the two countries), and the 'controversial' goings on at a beach in the south of the country, where a cargo ship had beached and the locals are pilfering the goods as freebie salvage.

That our government wasted any thought at all on Big Brother, much less had several lengthy debates about the whole tragic event in the commons, absolutely terrifies me. I've come to the conclusion that the public face of government is little more than front behind which a group of ambitious revolutionists sit and discuss how to turn the country against itself and allow their ideal communist dictatorship to rise from the ashes.

The ultimate irony being that it was only via the freedoms we have insisted we deserve over the centuries that allow such men chance to reign over us. Universal Suffrage. Democracy. Our greatest dream. Our ultimate downfall. Can I have a slow handclap please?
