Now, I know I comment on the Middle-East situation with a little too much regularity, and not a great deal of objectivity, but here we go again.

Surely Israel is skipping merrily down a one-way road to getting a smack across the face? In a small way, I admire that they've taken a strict no nonsense policy to terrorism, but their actions go beyond anything that could possibly be termed just. What do they think they're achieving by openly bombing civilians and destroying the infrastructure of entire nations? If they think they're going to bomb terrorists into submission, then they're in for a really big surprise.

All they're going to achieve by pointedly targetting innocent civilians is firmly planting any survivors and witnesses into the recruit of the very terrorist organisations they're looking to stamp out. These groups send the odd suicide bomber out in trickles rather than rivers because firstly, there aren't really that many terrorists to go around, and secondly, because it's not that easy to convince someone to kill themselves for the 'greater good'. Give these people a huge pool of raw recruits whose live have been destroyed and have little left to live for, and suddenly the need to be conservative with dynamite laden jackets is removed.

And let's not forget that Israel is, after all, firmly placed in a geographical area where the vast majority of neighbouring nations consider it an abomination, regardless of their public stance on the matter. Sure, some of you may point that these nations are woefully and magnificently ill-equipped to do anything about it, as a number of wars down the decades have proven. But is that really the point? Sooner or later, their silent outrage at the increasingly aggressive response of Israel's military will provoke an organised response, and full scale war is not far from being an inevitability. The Americans will simply coo that Israel will batter down the entire Arab world without breaking sweat, and they're probably right. But that point of view really does miss the point entirely. Should Israel again defeat the combined forces of the Anti-Israeli Arab world (most likely, it grieves me to say, with the repeated aid of the European big guns and the USA), it is no resolution to the problems this part of the world faces. The frustration of the Palestinians (can we even call them that any more?) that their nation continues to lie beyond grasp despite being within veiwing distance will continue to burn away at their souls. Terrorists will proliferate in increasingly desperate attempts to avenge the theft of their territory.

There is, unfortunately, no real solution to the entire issue, short of nuking the whole region, or relocating Israel to somewhere else and giving the land back to Palestine with the exception of Jerusalem, which is made into international territory. Of course, this isn't an option, because the Israelis will never leave willingly what they have fought for for so long, and neither side will likely accept not having Jerusalem as their very own Holy City.

Why the UN ever believed that partitioning a country against the wishes of the majority of its inhabitants could ever be anything other than a complete disaster is very much beyond my ability to comprehend. Of course, the fact that the UK paved the way for the UN to do it is a source of great shame, and a huge hole in my own patriotism.
